First day
My plane landed almost on time around 6.20-6.30 am in Sydney. I had a transfer in Frankfurt and a stop in Singapore. My suitcase got here with no problem, too, which was nice.
The people in Frankfurt seemed to think every traveller is German. There was this mean-looking lady at the security check gates and suddenly she just pulled me over to the chair. I couldn’t catch what she was saying (asking me to take my shoes off) even though I know a bit of German. I had to sit down, take my shoes off, and have them ran through a scanner.
I boarded a 747 in Frankfurt. It was rainy, so when the engine (turbine?) started all the water on the runway splashed backwards. The pilots on the plane (both from Frankfurt to Singapore and Singapore to Sydney) were really good, the landing and breaking went very smoothly; unlike on the Finnair flight to Frankfurt… (the pilot had to slam on the breaks)
So, I got through the customs and out of the airport around 7:15 am — my friend and her fiancĂ© picked me up. The temperature felt really nice from the very start. Even though it’s warm, it’s also humid so I seem to be handling it better. It got quite hot and sunny on our way from a grocery store (I should’ve worn my sunglasses…).
It’s so different here! All the sights and sounds — the trees and the birds make me feel like I’m walking in a tropical zoo.
There was a dinner tonight with a bunch of people, and I was nicknamed Finland or Finnie.
I didn’t get any sleep on the flights because it was so loud on the plane. It didn’t matter though; I slept for 5 hours today after lunch, it’s 12:30 am now, and I’m properly tired. Will the jetlag hit me later because now it feels quite normal? We’ll see…
Glad everything went well! What do you think about Singapore – although I know that you didn’t spend too much time to look around in the airport, but is it hot over there? Good thing you know a bit of German.. or you would think that you got in trouble! That’s nice that you got picked up. You won’t get lost =).. be sure to take pictures, I would love to see how it looks over there! Heh, nice nickname lol. Hope you won’t have problems with jetlag! Were you intended to do something over @ Australia or are you just going there for a nice vacation?
A foot scanner? So this is the future…
Yeah, I didn’t get to see much of Singapore. I did see the first real palmtrees there, though (they were on a golf course though, so I don’t know if they normally grow in Singapore). I have no idea how hot it was…
I don’t know if I have jetlag. I’m going to be at normal hours; at least normal for people, not necessarily normal for me but the days have been so busy that I’m tired at 10-11 pm already.
When the happy couple comes back from their honeymoon they’re going to take me to the aquarium and a new wildlife park (?) just next to the aquarium. We’re also going to some museums and probably a bit farther like the Bluemountains and some cave thing (unless it’s too far). We planned a lot Saturday night but I’ve forgotten…
Kory: they actually did check my feet, too, with the normal wand thingy that they use to check clothes (it makes a really funny noise close to metal). My shoes went through the luggage x-ray I think.
I hope you remembered to jump or dance (or something) during the flight. If you didn’t, I don’t understand how you can still be walking… Did you use my little present or were you too ashamed?
Luckily they don’t know finnish, ’cause otherwise that nickname “finnie” (just take e off) would be quite an insult. Teeheehee..
I know what you miss even more than our little fluffy doggy with pink nose: hugs.
I got up twice during the long flight from Frankfurt to Sydney: first when we had to go out in Singapore and second when I went to the toilet just before landing. I did move my feet about, though.
I didn’t use your present this time because the seats were pretty good. I probably will, on my way home. (Especially because I’ll buy earplugs so I can catch some real sleep.)
Yeah, I know about the nickname. I don’t have many finnies at the moment so I don’t mind. Aussies like silly nicknames anyway.
