New vocabulary
It’s strange how often after I learn a new word, it very soon appears somewhere else and I think how lucky I am having learned that just recently. For instance, a couple of days ago I learned the word kludge and today in an email at work someone was writing about a kludge for a program that allows files to be saved in Word doc format.
The day before yesterday I stumbled across the words “axon” and “dendrite” — parts (?) of a synapse, and yesterday, those words were in the book I’m reading, IT.
Maybe I’ve seen the words lots of times before but only now notice them, but I’m not willing to believe that. I want to believe that these are very lucky coincidences.
Ok, come on then Minna, what is a kludge, an axon and a dendrite?
If I die tomorrow not knowing, will I still go to Hell or will this make it all change for me?
No one who appreciates proper language is going to hell. Rest assured.
a kludge is a sort of unorthodox or unelegant way of doing things (e.g. on a computer) that just works.
axon is part of a nerve cell, as is dendrite
I’ve noticed the same phenomenon. Happens with much more than words, but it is strange how quickly a simple thing like that will be everywhere you seem to look.
I wonder if perhaps because now it is present at the front of your consiousness, then it becomes easier to see. Probably the easiest answer, but merely a thought. Still too much of a coincidence.
I’m such a sponge for new words – at least I like to think so – I usually stop and pick up a dictionary (if available) to check on an unfamiliar word.
I haven’t noticed this phenomenon with other things. I’ll have to start paying attention
