Paint it pretty
I’ve decided I want a splash of colour on my (to-be) brand new white walls. I haven’t yet decided if it’s going to be one wall in one colour or some sort of pattern.
I’d like it to be a pattern but the next hard question is, what pattern? I don’t want any nature themed patterns — flowers, leaves, trees. Boring and, not to mention, in fashion!
I could do something like the pattern in Jafer’s living room which looks really nice, but I suppose if I did something like that I’d have to do the whole foyer + living room+ kitchen area because it’s all one big space. It might not look good if there was a continuous pattern that was restricted to one wall — but my patience might run out if I took on decorating the whole room.
Of course, it would be nice if I had a favourite game, book or movie which could serve as inspiration, but I don’t think I’d like to have Sam Fisher peeking from behind the couch.
I could do something silly in the bedroom, like an alien or something computer-themed. I did think I’d frame some of the alien posters for the bedroom, though. Painting there would lose the purpose.
A coloured wall behind the bookcase could be nice if I bought a bookcase that shows through — and if I put the bookshelf on the short wall in the living-room. Or how would it look if I had flying books on one wall? Or a bookmark peeking from behind the bookcase!
I’ll have to visit a paint store where they have all kinds of stencils. Maybe I’ll get an inspiration there.
Update, October 8
Here are some colour palettes I’ve stumbled across/sampled:
– Black, grey, brown, and bright red at ColorCombos.com
– “Rojo” at ColorHunter.com
– Purples
I signed up for COLOURlovers, because I wanted to save a combo I picked. (Of course, I could’ve just saved the hex codes… But maybe it’s good to have the plans in one place.)
(The image looked better in the theme with a purple background but I’ll leave it be. This is an old post anyway.
Yes, if you do something like I have, you have to carry it through to the next adjoining room – otherwise it’s really weird, not just the “hmmm, what has she done in here?” kinda weird.
Something I’ve seen in lots of places that looks really good and I’ve thought of doing it here next time I feel like painting is the colour splash = you have your white walls and then in the middle of one wall you have a bright colour, and perhaps in the left part of another wall you have a colour.
I’ve seen it done really nicely and I guess it costs a helluva lot less than painting the whole room – it’s kinda like a wide stripe here and there, but it adds a lot of character to the room.
I have a narrow bit of wall in my living room between the foyer and the kitchen. First I thought of painting a chalkboard there but chalk is messy (I’m trying to find a magnetic whiteboard to slap on the fridge instead). There are also magnetic paints which could be used for memo boards (putting up photos, postcards, notes). That could be fun.
I definitely want to have a splash of colour (maybe nothing particularly bright, though). Can’t wait to go browsing in a paint store. First I’ll need to find a bookcase because I think that’ll be the most prominent thing in my living room. After the bookcase I’ll get a sofa to match the bookcase and then a paint to match the bookcase and sofa.
I was thinking an alien theme since you like it lol..and plus, you’ll have pictures framed…so maybe something mysterious like black & green.. haha, reminds me of the matrix..
As much as I’d like to do all things crazy, I have to realise that I’m 25 (soon 26, eep) not 15 I know, I know, I can be as silly as I like but I’ll have to think if silly is something I can stand to look at 24/7.
lol, i know what you mean XD.. esp. if its going to stay there as long as you’re living there XD! Good luck with thinking up a design – let us know ;)!!
I updated the post to add some links to some colour combinations I’ve come up with. I’m very undecided between red and purple. Maybe I get enough purple on this site (although, the new design that I never seem to finish is red…)
