What I learned today
The next phone I’m going to get will be a clamshell or a slide phone.
Why? Today as I was walking home, listening to music, my phone suddenly started a call. And the destination was none other than the emergency centre! I was mortified! I’ll have to figure out a better place for my phone in the bag — and fast!
Stupid phone.
Once a speed dial on my home phone (years ago) had changed its stored numbers from beginning with 011 (international prefix in USA) to 911 (emergency). I was surprised when I got connected to the emergency service when trying to dial my parents. Then I naturally used the speed dial again, before I figured out I’d need to reprogram it. I’m glad they didn’t send the police to my apartment…
I’ve been in love with the sliders ever since the original Nokia 8110 “banana” phone. Since then I’ve had the 8810 “zippo” and now use the E65.
If I had to get a new phone right now I’d get the E66. My brother got one after I was saying good things about the E65, and he sounds really happy with it.
Unfortunately I’m now using Google Calendar and it only supports sync to the iPhone and Windows-based phones, i.e. not Symbian S60. Fortunately I’m not planning to get a new phone right now, so I’m hoping that Google adds SyncML support to Google Calendar in the mean time…
I’ve tried a few non-Nokia phones and I keep coming to Nokia, so I’m not too enthusiastic about considering the iPhone. And Windows-based phones sound just too scary even as an idea.
Today I saw my first 5800 in the wild. (That’s the first touch phone from Nokia.) Wow. It was quite nice! It has a keyguard switch on the side and no number pad visible in the “start” screen so I don’t know how easy it would be to make accidental phone calls.
After seeing the 5800 I really feel like getting a new phone but I am going to try my hardest to wait for a really nice touch phone (preferably an Nseries if they ever make one with a touch screen) because that is a feature I’d love to try out. I wish the Nokia site had a search function to find all touch phones but currently it’s not a choice there. I suddenly have a total blackout and can’t remember if they’ve already mentioned the next touch UI phone. N97? I think that was the one that will be around 1000 euro after taxes and some extra just because this is Finland.
Well I hope everything was ok. I’ve had the same problem with some of my purses without different compartments inside – you go rooting around in the front pocket, or the back pocket or the side pocket trying to find the phone at the bottom. It’s a big pain in the ass.
I was so freaked out that I just hung up quickly, didn’t say anything. Maybe better (and quicker) than try and explain what happened… Now I switched the phone to a different compartment in my handbag so hopefully this won’t happen again. Sheesh.
