Compu(ma)terialist
I may not be a movie whore, but I’m a bit of a materialist when it comes to computers… Yesterday I heard a couple of boys talking on the train (sorry Kory, you have to see this twice )
– I just bought a new computer. It’s got 80 Gb hard drive <mumblemumble> and a 15 inch flat screen!
– Whooooah, I only got, like, 40 G!
I didn’t catch the gigahertzes or memory, but it can’t have been a lot with only 80 G! I felt like adding
– Njah njah, I got 200 Gb hard drive, 3.2 Ghz, and a 19 inch flat screen
but I didn’t. I know, my computer isn’t top notch by geeky standards, so that’s why I only brag about it in my blog where I can shut people up by saying this is my blog and this is my amazing computer.
Oh, and his name’s Sullivan. I’ve decided now. (My computer’s, that is.)
I’ve got 240GB combined in two hard disks on this machine, with a 17 inch flat screen, 2.5Ghz, 1GB ram and a GeForce 4 graphics card.
I just set up a Linux server, now that’s a hilarious machine 15GB hard disk, 500Mhz processor, 380MB ram and an old ATI Rage 32MB graphics card. However because I installed Linux on it, it’s still got over 10GB of space left, and it runs like a dream I still think Linux is the way to go, having seen the specs for Windows Vista.
I don’t have a link to my computer, but here’s a link to my little iPaq. I’m afraid the page is still under construction, needs finishing off then I need to get links to the programs and such.
Pretty I was just wondering here (as we’re on the subject of gadgets) if I should get an MP3 player – today at work people were whining on and on and it got a little annoying.
At first I thought of getting a mobile with MP3 player (as I’m buying a new mobile soon and there must be such things) but then thought it probably doesn’t have that much space and the battery would run out all the time. Hmm, I’ll have to think about this
I was going to mention one in your CD player thread, they’re far better investment than CD players are to be honest. I looked into the new iPod Nano, £140 over here (slightly less than my iPaq was) gets you a good 4GB of storage space (which for me would be bottomless, mp3 wise). My big issue is that I only usually listen to music in the car, but then a friend pointed me to itrip and similar devices, which take the output from the iPod and convert it into a short distance radio wave, which you can then tune a proper radio in (i.e. car radio, or home stereo with proper speakers) and hear all your mp3s on there. It’s quite impressive technology
My iPaq, little computer that it is, works absolutely perfectly as an mp3 player, as I have two 1GB storage cards. It runs a mini-winamp which makes controlling the music a doddle. It’s just not quite as portable because of the risk of damaging the screen.
Today at work I noticed that listening to music could be a good idea when some people are talking loudly (that is a bit distracting). I usually only listen to music when I’m at the computer, on my way to/from work and lectures I just read…
My computer’s around the same as yours, only a bastardized P5 instead of 4. However, I have so many damned programs on it click here to see that it feels just like a P2!
I have quite a lot of programs too, but I categorise them. Only main categories (games, Office, tools, graphics, net stuff) show up when I click All Programs.
Do you have some special desktop theme? I mean the area where your avatar is, don’t know what it’s part of… Looking nice anyway.
Looks to me like he’s using a skin program like WindowBlinds or StyleXP, that changes the way your windows look. I have mine set up to look like Vista (the new OS that Microsoft is working on).
“She”
Ahh… StyleXP, I’ve been thinking of installing that but didn’t dare as my previous computer was full of games… Are you using StyleXP, Mike? Is it working alright? Not causing grief etc.? Hmm, StyleXP is probably commercial product?
I’m glad Microsoft didn’t stick with the name “Longhorn”… Two reasons: WP Strayhorn, and to me Longhorn sounds like Deepthroat…
ahem…that was embarrassing.
I’ve used StyleXP, but now I use WindowBlinds…though it’s far more of a resource hog. StyleXP was fairly good on my machine though Never had any problems with it
The WP thing I get (especially as they’ve nicked the WP tagline), but deepthroat…wow, I’d like to be inside your mind…
I’m (she) using WindowBlinds and Object Desktop – the whole damned package where you can do all kinds of stuff with yourdesktop.
Right now I’m using a theme called Pix Office, but before that one I was using one called Terminator (thank you Ahnie).
Yep I got the whole Object Desktop package
My desktop can be seen here, but this is it in full skinned mode which slows my machine down a lot…so I only do it like this to show off, hence some plugins still being in ‘default’ state.
Mike, but am I talking about that deepthroat, or the government one or the X-Files one? Ok ok, I am talking about that deepthroat, but I wouldn’t know about it if it wasn’t for X-Files and a “You know you’re an X-Phile when…” list where it said that you know you’re an X-Phile when the word deepthroat makes you think of Mulder’s helper instead of that other thing. And it does make me think of Mulder’s helper.
StyleXP, WindowBlinds – gotta check them out. Although… I’m not minding my current desktop: gorgeous Robbie with pretty eyes and cute dimples Ahhh… *WindowsLogo + M* (minimizes all windows)
200Gbytes, thats nice. I have two sons #1 has a AMD64bit processor at 3.3G 3Gbytes memory, 1.1terrabytes of hard disk and the dual processor graphics card cost more than the computer, oh and all he does is watch dvds on it, #2 has 2.6Ghz AMD overclocked till it glows, 1G ram 1.5Terrabytes of hd, a Geforce somethingorother with 512Mram and plays online games with it.
I have an AMD2000+ 512Mram and a 120G harddisk, I make videos, publish newsletters, write books, design electronics, play x2 the threat, and blog. Oh and I share it with my wife who writes thousands of emails, designs booklets, publishes articles in newspapers and weekly mags. Oh but we do have an AOC 19″ LCD display and that is the best thing I ever bought for a computer, its just wonderful on the eyes.
I was watching out the bus window on friday and saw at least 20 people walking with those while iPod headphones, must be a fad or something.
Now you made me feel bad about my crappy computer… Nah, I’m upgrading in babysteps.
This display is nice, I must say. A lot brighter than the old one which was an annoyance because my sister wouldn’t let me keep the lights off and I couldn’t see anything (in a game) if the lights were on.
Silly materialists
LCD display? Those are great for viewing your PIN number in PDF document format stored on your RAID array.
Mine’s also LCD. I don’t know much about LCDs or TFTs, let alone CRTs, but I hope LCDs good for FPSs too.
Oh, but now I gotta go watch the TV and get my DVD/VCR plus my XF DVD-R ready.
I don’t know how DVDs would look on this LCD though because it’s SXGA (with 5:4)…
This thread is starting to look like an eye chart. But I don’t think you noticed that I was poking fun at the use of redundancies.
LCD display? “Liquid Crystal Display display?”
Ahhh… now I get it. I had to do define:RAID (others I knew) and it was something array something something and I grinned at the ‘array’ you’d written after it, but of course I didn’t get the rest of the joke.
*feeling stupid*
